Irving Harper, George Nelson Associates, designer
"The Herman Miller logo first appeared in this ad in 1946, when employees referred to it as the Herman Miller M, not as the company logo. It continued to be used in other ads and literature and has been modified slightly over the years. A charming—but apocryphal—story links its origins to a sculpture on the island of Crete seen and described by the company's founder, DJ De Pree. In reality, it was the creation of Irving Harper, a talented designer in George Nelson's office."
